We are spoilt for choice this month for jazz-related entertainment. Starting strong with three events on 1 October, we have US-based Amirtha Kidambi and Sunken Cages collaborating with members of the Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra at La Chunky Studios, LayLow’s first showcase of the month with Ariane Mamon at the Rum Shack and Contemporary Music for All (CoMA) is starting a series of creative rehearsals at the CCA. The new academic year has brought in the next jazz season for the Glasgow University Jazz Society, with their first weekly Thursday jam taking place on 3 October at the University of Glasgow concert hall. I am particularly looking forward to Ishmael Ensemble’s show at The Rum Shack later this month, and Lagos Thugs’ workshop on Afrobeat at the CCA, preceding their show at Stereo. Although somewhat distanced from the usual highlighted genres of the catalogue, Jyotsna Srikanth’s lunchtime concert at the University of Glasgow promises to take us on a journey through Carnatic music that is well worth the trip.
